Unigen Malaysia Deploys Automated Material Storage System to Support High-Volume Manufacturing

Designed to improve warehouse efficiency, inventory accuracy, material traceability, and storage utilization by automating the receiving, identification, storage, retrieval, and issuing of materials

Unigen Corporation, a global leader in the design and manufacture of enterprise and industrial electronics, today announced that its warehouse automation system is now operational at its manufacturing facility in Malaysia. The system integrates automated material storage and retrieval, barcode identification, inventory management, and automated guided vehicles (AGVs) to streamline material handling and component delivery to production.

The system automates key warehouse processes, from receiving and identification to storage, retrieval, and issuing. By linking physical material movements with inventory records, it improves visibility into material locations and transaction history while reducing reliance on manual handling.

The installation combines the SMD BOX XLR high-volume SMT storage system and the SMD BOX XLC automated tote-box storage system, both part of the Neotel ecosystem, along with barcode scanning, X-ray component counting, AGV transportation, and integration with Neotel Technology’s Smart Material Flow (SMF) software and Oracle systems. Together, these capabilities support material tracking, inventory updates, and work-order-based kitting to help ensure components are prepared for production requirements.

“The successful implementation of our automated material storage system marks another important milestone in UMYS’s factory automation journey,” said Gary Yeoh, General Manager of Unigen Malaysia. “This investment will help us improve inventory accuracy, reduce manual material handling, strengthen traceability, and improve overall operational efficiency. More importantly, it positions UMYS to support increasing production volumes, faster material readiness, and future business growth while delivering better service to our customers.”

Key Capabilities of the Material Storage Automation System

  • Automated material identification and verification: Barcode scanning connects physical materials to inventory records and supports verification of part details, quantities, receiving transactions, inspection status and storage availability.
  • X-ray auto counting and quantity-label reprinting: The Counter IN (Counter Plus) process performs X-ray auto counting and supports reprinting the latest quantity-label information.
  • Dual-system automated storage: The SMD BOX XLR is a high-volume storage system designed for surface-mount technology (SMT) components, supporting automated storage and retrieval to meet high-volume manufacturing needs. The SMD BOX XLC is an automated smart storage solution designed for tote-box storage in SMT manufacturing lines, supporting organized material storage and retrieval.
  • Automated material transportation: AGVs transport materials between warehouse operations and kitting, helping streamline material movement and support the flow of components to production.
  • Work-order-based kitting: The kitting window supports preparation of component kits based on work orders, helping connect material retrieval with production requirements.
  • Inventory updates and transaction traceability: The system records storage locations and transaction details, updates inventory following storage and material issuing, and uses final barcode verification to help confirm that the correct materials reach the intended destination.

The operational commissioning of this system directly supports Unigen’s ongoing commitment to delivering resilient, hyper-efficient, and scalable manufacturing solutions to its global customers and partners.
