SATA devices and native SAS devices are significantly different. SATA devices are inherently single‐port, half‐duplex and designed to operate with a single host, while SAS devices are dual ports, full duplex, and often assigned to operate with multiple hosts concurrently. In order to make a SATA device respond like a SAS device that is capable of receiving commands across both ports simultaneously (from multiple hosts if necessary) a more sophisticated interposer is required. This class of device is called a SAS to SATA bridge or Interposer, which presents itself to the host as a native SAS device. These devices have proven to be popular in applications where the preference is for the lower cost‐per‐gigabyte SATA drives, while maintaining all of the system‐level benefits of native SAS connectivity. The Unigen SAS to SATA Interposer is in full compliance with SAS 6Gb/s, 3Gb/s and SATA 6Gb/s. 3Gb/s. It is designed with the Marvell 88SF9110, 6Gb/s SAS to SATA bridge to produce maximum performance with speed negotiation and signal retiming/reconditioning.

Benefits
Interposer Functionality
The product acts as a bridge or interposer between SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) devices and SATA (Serial ATA) devices. It allows a SATA device to function like a SAS device, enabling it to receive commands across both ports simultaneously and operate with multiple hosts if necessary.
Compatibility
The interposer is fully compliant with SAS 6Gb/s, 3Gb/s, and SATA 6Gb/s, 3Gb/s standards. It supports high-speed data transfer rates of up to 6Gb/s for both SAS and SATA connections.
Dual Port and Full Duplex
The interposer provides dual ports for SAS connectivity, allowing for simultaneous data transmission and reception. It supports full duplex communication, meaning it can send and receive data simultaneously, enhancing overall performance.
Marvell 8SF9110 Bridge
The interposer is designed with the Marvell 88SF9110 SAS to SATA bridge. This bridge chip enables maximum performance by facilitating speed negotiation and signal retiming/reconditioning. It ensures reliable data transmission and optimal compatibility between SAS and SATA devices.
Cost-Effective Solution
The product is popular in applications where lower cost-per-gigabyte SATA drives are preferred. By using the interposer, users can take advantage of the affordability of SATA drives while maintaining the system-level benefits of native SAS connectivity.
