Developing Edge AI Solutions for Defense and Industrial Applications

In a system that integrates edge AI functionality by combining a commercially available computer with EdgeCortix’s SAKURA-II, an enhanced YOLO model was demonstrated. For example, when enclosing a detected object with a rectangular frame, the system previously handled the object’s movement by appropriately changing the size of the frame, but now a function to “rotate the frame itself” has been added.

When detecting a ship turning 90 degrees from above using YOLO, the standard model initially encloses the ship with a vertical frame, switching to a horizontal frame once the ship has turned beyond a certain angle. However, the enhanced model rotates the vertical frame in conjunction with the ship, transitioning from an oblique position to a horizontal one. This allows for the detection of not only the movement but also the orientation of objects, contributing to high-precision analysis of images captured by satellites and drones in fields such as defense.

Other features on display included the ability to freely configure the objects to be detected and a function to provide text explanations of the video content, utilizing applications such as multimodal generation AI, making them usable in manufacturing, industrial, and defense settings. As a simple use case, they also demonstrated a low-latency generation AI live demo using a system combining a Raspberry Pi with the

SAKURA-II-Equipped AI Accelerators and Server Architecture on Display

Unigen, a US company, also exhibited its SAKURA-II-equipped Amaretti E1.S/ E3.S AI accelerator modules,  which were announced in April 2026, as well as the compatible server Poundcake. The Amaretti E1.S/E3.S has an inference performance of up to 1920 TOPS of inference performance and uses 20% of the Watts with TPUs compared to training GPUs.

Unigen’s Poundcake server is fully compatible with AMD’s 4th Generation EPYC processors and can be configured with up to 16 Amaretti E1.S/E3.S accelerators
